8 Types of People You See at the Beach Every Single Summer

Ah, the beach. That sacred stretch of sand where the sun is blazing, the waves are crashing, and humanity is on full, glorious, slightly sunburned display. Every summer, without fail, the same cast of characters migrates to the shoreline like seagulls to a dropped hot dog. You know them. You love them. You’ve probably been one of them. Let’s dive in — no floaties required.

1. The Over-Packer Who Basically Moved In

You spot them from the parking lot. They’ve got a rolling cart, three tote bags, a pop-up tent that requires an engineering degree to assemble, a Bluetooth speaker, a mini cooler, a full-size cooler, two beach chairs, a hammock, and — is that a rug? It’s definitely a rug. They have somehow packed their entire living room and transported it to the beach, and honestly? Their setup is the most comfortable spot on the sand. Don’t be surprised when they pull out a charcuterie board at 11 a.m. and start offering you grapes. They are the undisputed kings and queens of beach real estate, and deep down, everyone is jealous.

2. The Person Who Never Actually Goes in the Water

They drove 45 minutes to the beach. They paid for parking. They lugged all their stuff across a quarter mile of hot sand. They set up their towel approximately three feet from the shoreline. And then? They sat down, opened a book, and have not moved a single muscle in four hours. The ocean is right there. Right. There. If you ask them why they won’t go in, they’ll give you a very reasonable answer involving jellyfish, or the temperature, or the fact that they “just got comfortable.” This person is a mystery wrapped in SPF 50, and we respect their dedication to the art of doing absolutely nothing.

3. The Sunscreen Zealot

This person arrived at the beach with a tote bag containing no fewer than seven different sunscreen products, ranging from SPF 30 to SPF 1000 (or so it seems). They have applied sunscreen in the car, in the parking lot, at the entrance, and again before setting down their towel. They will reapply every 47 minutes whether or not they’ve been in the water. They will offer sunscreen to strangers. They will remind you, unprompted, that UV rays are no joke and that their dermatologist has a very strong opinion about this. Are they annoying? Slightly. Will they look 35 when they’re 60? Absolutely. The Sunscreen Zealot gets the last laugh every single time.

4. The Extremely Competitive Volleyball Player

Nobody came to this casual beach trip expecting a tryout for the Olympic team, and yet here we are. The Competitive Volleyball Player showed up with their own net, their own ball, their own knee pads, and the energy of someone who has a personal vendetta against fun. They will spike the ball directly into the face of a 7-year-old without remorse. They will argue calls. They will do a victory dance. They are simultaneously the most entertaining and most terrifying person at the beach, and the safest thing you can do is volunteer to keep score from a safe distance.

5. The Person Who Brought the World’s Loudest Bluetooth Speaker

Somewhere between the dunes and the tide, there is a person who has decided that their music taste is a gift to be shared with every living soul within a 300-yard radius. Their speaker — which appears to have been designed for stadium concerts — is blasting a playlist that makes no sense. It’s club music at 10 a.m. It’s a country ballad followed immediately by heavy metal. It’s whatever this is, and it is LOUD. They are completely unbothered by the dirty looks because they are in their element, eyes closed, nodding their head, living their absolute best life. And honestly, a small part of you respects it.

6. The Determined Sand Castle Architect

Most people build a little mound of sand, stick a shell on it, and call it a day. Not this person. This person showed up with actual sculpting tools, a reference photo, and a vision. They have been working on this sand castle since 8 a.m. It has towers. It has a moat. It has an architectural detail that might be a drawbridge. A small crowd has gathered to watch. Children are in awe. Adults are quietly embarrassed by their own life choices. The Determined Sand Castle Architect does not look up from their work. They have a deadline — high tide — and they are not missing it. This is their Sistine Chapel, and they will defend it from wayward Frisbees with their life.

7. The “I’m Just Here to Read” Person Who Has Already Fallen Asleep

They came with the best intentions. They had a 400-page novel, a sun hat, a cold drink, and an ambitious reading goal. They were going to get through at least 100 pages today. That was the plan. The plan lasted exactly 22 minutes before the combination of warm sun, gentle waves, and the rhythmic sound of the ocean lulled them into the deepest, most peaceful sleep of their entire adult life. The book is now on their face. The drink is sweating in the sand next to them. They are dreaming something wonderful. Do not wake them. They have never been more content in their lives, and they deserve every second of this accidental nap.

8. The Person Who Treats the Ocean Like Their Personal Gymnasium

While the rest of us are gently wading in up to our knees and shrieking about how cold the water is, this person has already swum approximately half a mile out and is doing something that looks like it belongs in a Navy SEAL training video. They are diving into waves. They are bodyboarding at speeds that should require a helmet. They have been in the water for two hours and show no signs of stopping. They emerge occasionally to grab a handful of trail mix before sprinting back in. They are hydrated, athletic, annoyingly energetic, and they will absolutely still be out there when everyone else has packed up to go home. We are not worthy.

The Beach: Where Everyone Belongs (Questionable Playlists and All)

Here’s the thing about the beach — it’s one of the last great equalizers. CEOs and kindergarteners, fitness fanatics and professional nappers, sand sculptors and people who are simply here for the vibes: we all end up in the same place, squinting into the sun and arguing about whether it’s too early to eat the snacks. The beach doesn’t judge. It just keeps doing its thing, waves rolling in and out, while we all do ours.

So which one are you? And more importantly — did you remember the sunscreen? Because if you didn’t, the Sunscreen Zealot in row C has you covered. Literally.
