Updated February 9th, 2025

With e-bikes growing in popularity, securing them has never been more crucial. In 2025, bike locks have evolved with advanced designs and top-notch security features. This guide highlights the best e-bike locks of the year, offering options to suit various budgets and protection needs, ensuring your ride stays safe wherever you go.

1. Best U-Lock – Hiplok D1000

Hiplok D1000 product image

Specifications

  • Sold Secure Rating – Diamond, ART 4 Star
  • Lock Size – 9.1 x 6.1 x 1.6 inches
  • Internal Lock Dimensions – 6.1 x 3.6 inches
  • Weight – 4.19 lbs
  • Lock Type – U-Lock

What we liked:

  • Sold Secure Diamond and ART 4 Star ratings
  • Built to withstand sustained attacks by an angle grinder.
  • Big enough to fit around most bike frames
  • Available accessory cables and chains to lock things with your bike

What we didn’t like:

  • At over 4 lbs it is on the heavy side to carry around
  • Not as easy to fit around things as a folding lock or chain
  • U-Locks aren’t that easy to mount inside an ebike frame especially for step-thru frames

The Hiplok D1000 is a Sold Secure Diamond rated U-Lock or D-Lock that will protect against angle grinders. This lock is made from graphene reinforced hardened steel. It has been shown to take as much as 20 times longer to cut with an angle grinder than a standard U-Lock.

There are plenty of test videos online showing it required multiple grinding discs as well as batteries before they cut could through it with an angle grinder. If I needed to leave my ebike anywhere overnight unattended, I would use nothing less than this lock.

The lock has 6.3 x 3.6 inch internal dimensions. You’ll have to find something close that isn’t too large to get this lock around and your bike frame. That is the only true downside to it. Hiplok is releasing the DX1000 soon that is about an inch larger in both dimensions which will be a little easier to fit around things. The DX1000 is available for pre-order only right now.

What we liked:

  • Very heavy duty construction
  • Sold Secure Gold rating
  • 3 year warranty including key replacement
  • Anti-rattle pivot joints keep your bike quiet while riding with it
  • Includes a holder with a variety of mounting options
  • Long enough to wrap around large ebike frames

What we didn’t like:

  • The lock is on the heavy side if you had to carry it around in a bag

The SEATYLOCK Foldylock Forever is a large and heavyduty folding bike lock with a Sold Secure Gold Rating. This lock has high strength steel bars and protected rivets. It is one of 2 folding ebike locks made that have the Sold Secure Gold Rating. There are no folding bike locks with a Sold Secure Diamond Rating (protects against angle grinders).

It comes with a carrying bracket that can mount to your bike in 2 ways. You can use the water bottle mounting bolts or you can wrap it around the frame. It has anti-vibration springs in the rivets to keep the lock from ratting and making tons of noise while you ride on less than smooth terrain. The lock is big enough to easily go around an ebike frame and a post or sign.

The only real downside to the Foldylock Forever is just it’s size and weight. It’s fine going on a frame mount on the bike. I would not want to carry it’s 4 lbs around in a backpack all day while riding. It takes up much less space on a bike frame than a full size U-Lock so it works well for step-thru ebike frames.

The downsides to the Mason is just the size and storing it on your bike. It is larger so it may not fit inside an ebike frame. It will take up most of the step-thru space on a step-thru frame. The lock does not include any frame mounting hardwear. You have to buy it separately. What we didn’t like:

The Hiplok DX is Sold Secure Diamond Rated and designed to protect against prolonged attacks with an angle grinder. It is one of the toughest bike locks available. Like the Hiplok D1000 it is made with graphene reinforced hardened steel making it very difficult to cut through.

Bike Lock Security Ratings

Sold Secure Rating

Sold Secure is an independent testing and certification organization that evaluates the security of locks for bicycles, motorcycles, and other valuables. Their ratings provide guidance on the effectiveness of locks against theft. Here’s an overview of the different levels of Sold Secure bike lock ratings:

Bronze

  • Description: Locks with a Bronze rating offer a minimal level of security, suitable for short-term stops in areas with low theft risk. They are often lightweight and affordable but not robust enough to resist determined or prolonged attacks.
  • Security Level: Basic
  • Recommended Use: Low-risk areas or for securing inexpensive bicycles.

Silver

  • Description: Silver-rated locks provide a good balance between security and weight. They are designed to resist common theft tools such as bolt cutters and saws for a limited time. Ideal for cyclists who need more protection than Bronze offers but want to avoid the weight and cost of higher-rated locks.
  • Security Level: Moderate
  • Recommended Use: Medium-risk areas or for securing mid-range bicycles.

Gold

  • Security Level: High
  • Recommended Use: High-risk areas or for securing high-value bicycles.
  • Description: Gold-rated locks are engineered to provide a high level of security, capable of withstanding prolonged attacks with a range of tools. These locks are heavier and more robust, making them ideal for urban environments and long-term parking where theft risk is significant.

Diamond

  • Security Level: Maximum
  • Recommended Use: Very high-risk areas or for securing premium or e-bikes.
  • Description: The highest level of security offered by Sold Secure. Diamond-rated locks are designed to withstand professional theft attempts and are rigorously tested against advanced tools and techniques. These locks are often bulkier and more expensive but provide the ultimate protection for your bicycle.

ART Rating

The ART foundation is an independent Dutch organization that tests and certifies bike locks based on their ability to resist various theft techniques. ART ratings range from 1 to 5 stars, with higher ratings indicating greater resistance to theft. These ratings are widely used, particularly in Europe, to help cyclists choose suitable locks based on their security needs.

ART 1-Star (★)

  • Security Level: Basic
  • Recommended Use: Accessories or low-value bicycles in low-risk areas.
  • Description: Locks with an ART 1-star rating provide basic protection and are suitable for securing items like bike accessories or for very short-term stops in areas with minimal theft risk. These locks are lightweight and less resistant to sophisticated tools.

ART 2-Star (★★)

  • Security Level: Moderate
  • Recommended Use: Mid-range bicycles in medium-risk areas.
  • Description: ART 2-star locks offer a reasonable level of security and are tested to withstand common theft tools like bolt cutters for a limited time. They are a good option for bicycles parked in moderately safe environments or for quick errands.

ART 3-Star (★★★)

  • Security Level: High
  • Recommended Use: High-value bicycles or medium-risk areas.
  • Description: Locks with an ART 3-star rating are more robust and provide significant resistance to theft attempts. These locks are ideal for protecting high-value bicycles in urban or higher-risk areas and are a common choice for daily commuting.

ART 4-Star (★★★★)

  • Security Level: Very High
  • Recommended Use: Premium bicycles or high-risk areas.
  • Description: ART 4-star locks are designed for areas with high theft risk. These locks undergo rigorous testing and are highly resistant to advanced tools and techniques. They are suitable for securing expensive bikes and are often recommended for long-term parking in urban areas.

ART 5-Star (★★★★★)

  • Security Level: Maximum
  • Recommended Use: Motorcycles, e-bikes, or very high-risk areas.
  • Description: The highest level of ART certification, 5-star locks are designed for ultimate security. These locks are tested to withstand professional theft attempts using advanced tools and techniques. They are typically bulkier and heavier but offer maximum protection for high-value bicycles, e-bikes, and motorcycles.

Choosing the Right Rating

  • Low-Risk Areas: Bronze, Silver or 1 Star, 2 Star
  • Medium Risk Areas: Silver or 3 Star
  • High-Risk Areas: Gold or 4 Star
  • Very High-Risk Areas or Valuable Bikes: Diamond or 5 Star
